Getting Back Runaways

Silver @ Silver's Petz Site

Special thanks to Carolyn, a petz fan I met on alt.games.petz for this great tip!

Note: I do not have the time to get back run away petz for people. I'm very, very sorry. Please do not send me your petz to get back.

Please read the directions thoroughly before starting. Neither Carolyn nor I are responsible for damages done. This does work!

Directions

Although the information on whether a cat or dog feels neglected is somewhere in the .pet file, you can make it return to the playpen with a small Registry edit.

Start by backing up all of your petz files. That way, if any other petz runaway during this process, you can get them back just by putting the backed up file into your "Adopted Petz" folder.

Now, look at the pet you want to have come home in a hex editor. The first byte will be something like BD (in the hex numbers section). Make a note of this.

Now run Regedit.exe -- as always when fiddling with the Registry, make sure you back it up first in case of accidents! -- and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PF.Magic\Petz 3\3.00.01

Scroll down to "Pets in Playpen" and double-click on it. Replace the first two digits (which are probably 00, if all your pets have run away) with the number you noted down -- in my example, BD, and replace the next byte with 0B. So the Value data will look like this: BD 0B 00 00 00 00 00 00.

Click "ok" and close Regedit.exe.

Make sure that your pet's .pet file is in the "Adopted Petz" subdirectory of your Petz 3 directory, run Petz3, and your chosen pet should come out of the door right away. You'll have to pet it and play with it a lot to make it happy again, though!

If after doing this, your pet still has the "runaway" status, simply repeat this procedure. Make sure that you play with the runaway to make it happy again before closing the petz program!

Some of the "neglected" runaways seem to get stuck as labelled runaways even when given a lot of love and attention on their forced return. This is fixable by changing the computer clock back a by a couple of months before bringing the runaway into the game. Then, when you set your clock back to the correct date, the pet can be rehabilitated using the original tip.

How to change the clock: Right click on the clock in the tray and choose "Adjust Date/Time"; then move the date back a couple of months. Click "Apply" and then "OK". When you're done getting your pet back, do the same procedure, but set the date to the correct date.
